If a behavior
is causing problems
in your relationships
,
then usually it’s time
to make some changes

Addictions, or bad habits, come in many different forms: too much drinking, too much marijuana use, too much internet porn or even too much time at work. Doing “too much” of any of these things can get in the way of the life that you want.

Research shows that many people have a genetic predisposition towards certain behaviors, a biological basis. This means that many bad habits run in families. When it comes to bad habits or addictions, an aunt or uncle, parent or grandparent often practice similar behaviors.

Repeating an action over and over can create a bad habit or addiction that is difficult to stop. An action that is used to help us deal with a difficult emotional issue can turn into as much as a problem as the initial issue. In this case it would be important to look at both.

Poor habits or addictions are usually supported by the choices that we make in other areas of our lives. Creating times that we are alone and not accountable for, hanging around people who share or profit from an addiction, or spending money meant for other things all create a cycle of guilt, shame and more time spent practicing the bad habit or addiction.

Give yourself a break. Change is not easy! Let’s figure this out together.

If you are the spouse or significant other of someone who is practicing a problem behavior things can get pretty dark at times. However there are things you can do to take care of yourself. Changes made by a spouse or significant other can encourage the addicted person to change. If children are involved it is even more important that the situation be discussed with a counselor .

Give me a call or send an Email if you or someone you know needs to cut back on a bad habit.
