What does it take
to be genuinely happy?

Who am I really? Am I normal?

Individual growth begins with the opportunity for us to tell our stories. Talking about our day to day lives has an interesting result, we begin to see ourselves from a distance and gain perspective on who we are. We begin to understand why we do this or that and go a bit easier on ourselves. Emotions that have been trapped inside of us have an opportunity to be expressed.

If needed, after you have told your story a good counselor helps you to see your thinking errors. A thinking error is a thought that causes you or your loved ones pain. For instance if I think that I am not good at meeting people because of one bad experience, that is a thinking error called generalizing. If I think that I am not a good person because an angry relative once told me I was bad, that is a thinking error called an introject. Exploring and correcting thinking errors is a very effective and powerful method of making changes in our lives.

And oh those emotions! Feeling emotions is not always comfortable but venting emotional energy that has been tucked away is a very powerful and permanent method of internal change. This is where having the right counselor is extra important. One a needs a counselor who can monitor how rapidly we go into some areas and keep us company if we find lonely times.

The result of sharing our stories, identifying thinking errors and of expressing emotions to a trusted and competent counselor is a new found “lightness” to life. Many old wounds heal and lose their power. Our thoughts and actions begin to be more spontaneous.

Also a new found depth is present. We know who we are, how we feel and what we want. Difficult times or difficult people have less power. We are finally free to be who we were meant to be.
