Before We Do is a six-session premarital counseling program designed for engaged couples who want more than a one-weekend workshop. The program pairs a comprehensive relationship assessment with structured guided sessions covering five domains that research consistently shows predict long-term marital outcomes: communication patterns, conflict styles, financial expectations, family-of-origin dynamics, and physical and emotional intimacy.
This program is for couples planning their wedding and who want to invest in their relationship with the same care they're investing in the ceremony. It is not a religious workshop, a single-weekend crash course, or a checkbox exercise. It is evidence-based clinical work designed to help engaged couples identify their strengths, understand their vulnerabilities, and establish communication patterns that will hold through the years after the wedding.
The program includes one joint couple intake session, one individual intake session with each partner, and three structured working sessions — six sessions total. Delivered in-person in Golden, Colorado, just off I-70, or via secure telehealth anywhere in Colorado. Dr. John O'Malley, PhD, LPC, NCC, has spent more than fifteen years helping couples in the Colorado foothills build stronger relationships.

Before We Do: Premarital Counseling
Every premarital couple starts where every couple starts with me: the Couples Roadmap. The one difference is that premarital work also includes the PREPARE/ENRICH assessment, one of the most widely used and well researched premarital tools available.
We’ll still look at the negative cycle the two of you can get caught in, the moments where you stop feeling like a team. We’ll also look at Gottman’s Four Horsemen, the four patterns that predict trouble down the road. On top of that, PREPARE/ENRICH lets us look closely at the areas that matter most in a marriage, like communication, conflict, money, and family expectations. You’ll walk away knowing your strengths as a couple and where to grow, before the wedding instead of years after.
How it’s structured
Session 1: The three of us together, 2 hours ($500)
Session 2: Individual session with Partner A, 1 hour ($250)
Session 3: Individual session with Partner B, 1 hour ($250)
Session 4: Roadmap feedback session with your written plan and PREPARE/ENRICH results, 2 hours ($500)
Session 5: The three of us together, 1 hour ($250)
Session 6: The three of us together, 1 hour ($250)
Six sessions, eight clinical hours, $2,000 total. You pay after each session, so nothing is due up front. If you’d like to keep going after the sixth session, we can talk about what that looks like. Many couples stop there feeling ready, and that’s a great outcome too.
